Flipping the classroom with video fosters intrinsic motivations for learning

Updated: Dec 9, 2018

In High School I was a honors student, but a failure at math. I just couldn't remember all the different rules. They were too abstract and non-intuitive to me. Later while in college I took a course that taught College Algebra using videos. I could pause, rewind, and replay lessons. Some things I got right away, while others I needed to review several times before the information and application became integrated into my cognitive process. For the first time, using video lessons, I became a success at math. In this Ted Talk, Salman Khan of Khan Academy, talks about using videos to flipped the classroom in ways that fosters self efficacy, self regulation, and increased intrinsic motivations for learning subjects that students find difficult.

http://www.ted.com Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and, now, other subjects. He shows the power of interactive exercises, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script -- give students video lectures to watch at home, and do "homework" in the classroom with the teacher available to help.
